FEBRUARY BUDGET: COST FOR A MONTH IN AUSTRALIA FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR

FEBRUARY BUDGET: COST FOR A MONTH IN AUSTRALIA FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR

In the month of February, we spent time in two separate locations: Noosa Heads and Palm Cove, both in Queensland, Australia. As such, our transportation costs for this month came down significantly since we only had one domestic flight (from Cairns to Brisbane) to pay for, plus approximately three weeks of car rentals.

We expect that our transportation expenses will shoot back up significantly next month when we have two international flights, with the second of these flights taking us all the way to Europe.

Our continued avoidance of expensive restaurants and our longer Airbnb stay also helped keep our budget very reasonable this month.

MEALS, GOODS, AND SERVICES COSTS

Our expenses for meals, goods, and services in February decreased significantly from our comparable expenses in January to 956 USD, due mostly to our concerted efforts to minimize eating out at restaurants. We did still order the occasional pizza and ate in a restaurant a few times.

We have also once again included some tourist excursions in this category, including visits to Mossman Gorge, Port Douglas, Cairns, and a trip on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway outside of Cairns.

ACCOMMODATION COSTS

This month, we benefited significantly from very reasonable accommodation costs in Palm Cove, where we stayed for 27 of 29 nights. We received a significant discount for booking for the full month here. The remaining 2 nights we spent in Noosa Heads, which was approximately triple the cost per night.

Overall, our accommodation costs were down over last month, with our total spend on accommodation ringing in at 2,251 USD.

TRANSPORTATION COSTS

We spent a total of 927 USD on transportation in February. We are very happy with this level of spending on transportation, but it flows directly from our conscious decision to travel slowly this month.

SUMMARY

Overall, we spent a total of 4,133 USD in February of 2024, which is significantly less than our regular monthly expenses back home in Toronto, Canada. Our one ongoing fixed expense back home is for storage, which costs us 140 USD per month and is excluded from our totals.

So far, for our travels as a family of four since the start of September has been 27,853 USD, which excludes our flight to Bali in August (just over 3,000 USD).
