Chasing Waterfalls: A Visit to Tegenungan Waterfall

This week we spent a couple of days travelling around the interior of Bali on our way to and from Ubud, the cultural capital of the island.
One of our first stops was at Tegenungan Waterfall, where we descended hundreds of giant stairs etched into a stone cliff face down to the plunge pool at the base of the cascade, then shuffled across a very narrow and slippery bamboo bridge spanning the rapids below to get to the other side.
We managed to get to the waterfall early enough in the morning that we *just* beat the crowds of tourists, and had it almost all to ourselves the whole time we were there.
The only people we shared the hidden paradise with were a bride and groom taking some quiet wedding photos in front of the falls and a couple of European tourists posing for Instagram photos in their Speedos — together we were a pretty random grouping, but we all respected one another’s peace and space, which made it easy to just stand there quietly taking in the natural spectacle and the lush jungle curtaining it.
